Best of 2008: Red Carpet - Part II

Here are the Top Five Red Carpet looks of the year...

5: Scarlett Johansson in Dolce & Gabbana at the Costume Institute Party of the Year

ScarJo (yep, I like these celeb nicknames) is the epitome of the blonde bombshell, and she always makes sure to dress the part when making a public appearance.
She arrived at this event with both Mr. Dolce and Mr. Gabbana by her side wearing, what else, than one of the designers' creations.

This little nude number is perfect because it combines cute and sexy, with the tulle bottom-half and the structured bustier, which gives a lot of va-va-voom.

Paired with nude pumps, this look is close to flawless.
I especially love how the dress is such a neutral tone. If it were red or black or blue, it would just be a little too much.

4: Jessica Biel in Dior at the BAFTA's

You don't ordinarily see Ms. Biel all glamed up for an event - usually she opts for a rather boring and safe look.

But this... This Dior gown is just beyond brilliant.
It's so very simple, but totally effective. This is actually something I would excpect of Angelina Jolie.

This strapless dress that has a bit of a train, combined with a gorgeous Cartier bracelet, is all one needs to look completely hot at an awards show.

3: Kate Hudson in Balmain at the SAG Awards

I'm going to just put it out there: I'm like in love with Kate Hudson.
Let me tell you why.

When other people show up on the Red Carpet, they usually wear these prom dress-inspired ball gowns. Now, that's not a bad thing, but it's always refreshing to see something a little different (and I am NOT talking about Björk's swan outfit).

Here Kate is in all her hippie glory, looking a lot like her mum actually.
This empire waisted Balmain dress is bohemian-chic, but still remains elegant and classy.

I just love it.

2: Heidi Klum in John Galliano at the Academy Awards

Heidi has had a ravishing year when it comes to her sense of style, and when she showed up at the Oscars wearing this custom designed gown by John Galliano, all I could do was applaude her.

It's a bit on the theatrical side, but her, if you're not allowed to wear a slightly over-the-top dress at the Oscars, then where (again, still not talking about you Björk)?

A beautiful structure, an eye-catching colour... Ah. All I can say is: Well done Heidi. A+

1: Kate Bosworth in Chanel Haute Couture at the Costume Institute Party of the Year

Surprising, isn't it? That the hottest Red Carpet look of the year isn't some big dress, with poofy ribbons everywhere that's supposed to make a statement.

I guess there's a lesson to learn here: less is always more.

Kate added a splash of colour to the Red Carpet in this gorgeous Chanel dress and sandal heels.
The dress puts the LBD to shame!
I just love it beyong words.
It's indescribable.
So I'm going to stop trying to describe its brilliance.
The dress speaks for itself.

Best of 2008: Red Carpet - Part I

This past year has been a great year for fashion.
All the shows, all the trends... and all of these can be seen put together on the Red Carpet.

10: Thandie Newton in Alexander McQueen at the BAFTA's

Thandie is very elegant and sophisticated when it comes to her taste in fashion. Her appearance at the British Academy Film Awards gave us no reason to think otherwise when she stepped out wearing this chic McQueen dress, adding a dash of colour with a pink waist-clinching belt as her major accessory.

I must say, I'm loving the fact that it's kind of like a one-shouler piece, but not really because of the sheer lace arm. The slit at the bottom adds some more sexy to the look.

9: Taylor Swift in Badgley Mischka at the Costume Institute Party of the Year

I've never heard any of her music, but I'll have to admit: Taylor's had some really nice choices. Here she is (photographed with the designers) in a simply elegant gold sequined gown.

I love it because it looks a little mermaid-y, but totally awesome.
I would've probably worn it with a messy ponytail or something, but that's just me.

8: Coco Rocha and Anja Rubik both in Emilio Pucci at the Costume Institute Party of the Year

They might not be over-the-top celebs, but these girls are Super Models. In my opinion, that's way cooler.

Coco (left) wore a drapey sequined dress, which has a kind of 80's feel to it (at least the colours, pattern and texture), while Anja (right) opted for a more geometric pattern, channeling 70's hippie chic with a modern twist.

These looks are not typical Red Carpet looks - and I love them.

7. Rihanna in Zac Posen at the Grammy Awards

We've all noticed how Rihanna has a slightly... eccentric taste in clothes. But this blue Zac Posen mini dress is perfect for the Grammy Red Carpet.

It's not a typical muffin-mini. The structure is nice and the bustier is kinda Madonna-esque.

Lovin' it.

6. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in Diane von Furstenberg at the Costume Institute Party of the Year

The ever-so stylish duo showed up wearing gowns that were completely dissimilar - but totally true to their own signature styles.

M-K wore a gold empire wasited long sleeved dress with a loose up-do, while sister Ashley wore a black figure-hugging piece with slits on the sides.

Mary-Kate was more boho (shocker) and Ashley more sexy, but both looked pretty damn fabulous.

Celeb: Nicole Richie

Event: Out and About in LA

One of Hollywood's hottest mamas (we can nickname her NicRic) was spotted in West Hollyweird looking impecably chic.

Now, I wouldn't generally condone the use of denim jackets, but I must say that this one is definetely wearable. First of all, it's dark denim - light denim jackets are just agony and way too 90s - so it doesn't really look like denim at all. Secondly, the tailoring and structure is muy bueno.

Add on some black leggings, a nice black beanie, awesome Holly Golightly sunnies and Christian Louboutin boots and, oh look at that; instant elegancy with a nod to equestrian-style.

LOVES IT.

NicRic: 8.5/10
